DUBAI: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, the Private Office of H.H. the Ruler of Dubai hosted the Desert Race, marking the third stage of the ninth Al Salam Cycling Championship. This prestigious event is known as the world’s largest community race in terms of diversity and prize value.
Held at the Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve in Dubai, the competition saw cyclists battling intense desert terrain. The event featured two challenging routes: Sarouq Al-Hadid (52 km) and Al Ashoosh (57 km), as well as a timed sprint segment at Areeqib Brashi. The race began with a ceremonial flag-off by Omair bin Jumaa Al Falasi, Director General of the Private Office of H.H. the Ruler of Dubai.
The riders showed impressive endurance as they navigated sand dunes, wearing helmets, cycling glasses, and hydration packs to ensure safety. Shabab Al Ahli Cycling Club dominated the top spots, with Grega Bol securing first place in the Al-Ashoush 57-km race. In the Sarouq Al-Hadid race, Essaid Abelouache claimed first, while Shabab Al Ahli took the team rankings for both races.
The Dubai Endurance City Point Sprint Challenge highlighted the talents of local cyclists, with notable performances in the UAE Nationals and Residents categories. Abdullah Saeed Al Hattawi from the Dubai Police Cycling Team topped the 40+ years UAE Nationals category.
Omair bin Jumaa Al Falasi reflected on the visionary leadership of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, praising the event’s ability to showcase Dubai’s stunning desert landscapes. The race is not only a sporting challenge but also a celebration of the emirate’s natural beauty, with breathtaking views of Al Marmoom’s serene lakes and diverse terrains.
The championship will conclude with the Women’s Race on February 16, 2025, at Al Marmoom.
