Google has added Gemini AI tools to Chrome, enabling task automation, image generation, and a personalised browsing experience.
MOUNTAIN VIEW: Google is rolling out enhanced Gemini AI features in its Chrome browser, marking a significant step in the company’s mission to deliver a universal assistant that simplifies everyday digital tasks.
The updates include tools like Nano Banana, an image generation feature, and “Auto browse,” a new agentic AI that can perform complex web tasks from a single prompt. Gemini will also appear in a side panel in Chrome’s new layout, giving users easy access to the AI while browsing.
The company is also integrating its “Personal Intelligence” function into the browser, connecting with apps such as Gmail and Google Photos. This allows Gemini to offer tailored support, including summarising user content, completing forms, or providing reminders.
In a blog post, Parisa Tabriz, Vice President of Chrome, said the AI-powered browser has proven useful in internal testing. “Our testers have used it for everything from collecting tax documents and managing subscriptions to renewing driving licences and getting quotes for plumbers. It’s saved them a tonne of time.”
These tools mirror similar upgrades recently added to the standalone Gemini app, as Google pushes for a more seamless AI ecosystem. The company’s efforts align with the vision of DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who has described a “universal assistant” as an AI that can plan and act across devices on behalf of the user.
With these changes, Chrome becomes not just a web browser, but an active AI assistant designed to streamline tasks, reduce digital clutter, and enhance productivity. Google appears to be moving quickly to stay ahead in the AI assistant race, particularly as competition from other tech firms intensifies.
