ABU DHABI: Two outstanding students from the UAE, Alya Alhabtari and Firas Darwish, have been awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. The UAE Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee announced the winners, recognising their exceptional intellect, leadership, and commitment to service.

Both recipients were selected based on their ambition to create impact, courage to act, and dedication to excellence. They will join a global cohort of scholars and changemakers, beginning their academic journey at the University of Oxford in October 2025.

Securing a Rhodes Scholarship is no small feat. The rigorous process includes submitting personal statements, academic records, and undergoing interviews. This year, 11 finalists from leading universities in the UAE competed in the final interview round, where Alya and Firas stood out.

Alya Alhabtari plans to pursue an MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy and a Master’s in Public Policy. Her studies will equip her to enhance the UAE’s foreign aid initiatives.

Meanwhile, Firas Darwish aims to undertake an MSc in Advanced Computer Science and a Master’s in Public Policy. His focus lies in contributing to global AI governance, addressing data privacy concerns, and reducing bias in AI systems. Both students currently study at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).

Last year’s winners, Emirati Sara Alnajjar and Bulgarian Monika Mitova, were also students at NYUAD, highlighting the university’s strong track record in nurturing Rhodes Scholars.

This achievement reflects the UAE’s growing presence on the global academic stage, with students continuing to shape meaningful change and contribute to global progress.
