DUBAI: The emirate’s taxi sector experienced significant growth in 2024, driven by the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) strategy to shift towards e-booking. This move not only improved traffic flow but also enhanced sustainability by promoting the use of advanced ride-booking technology.
Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, highlighted the 16% surge in market share for electronically booked taxi trips in 2024 compared to 2023. Similarly, Hala Ride, a leading ride-hailing service, increased its market share during peak hours from 42% to 50%.
This technological transformation resulted in notable operational changes. Approximately 7,600 traditional taxis were removed from daily operations, reflecting a shift towards efficiency. Passengers benefited immensely, with over 74% of e-booked rides achieving arrival times of under 3.5 minutes, showcasing high customer satisfaction.
Drivers also enjoyed considerable advantages. The transition led to a reduction of 50 minutes in their daily driving time and a 4% drop in overall travel distances in 2024. These improvements eased driver fatigue while contributing to environmental sustainability by reducing emissions.
The RTA’s strategy underscores Dubai’s commitment to integrating innovative solutions for urban mobility. By encouraging the adoption of electronic booking systems, the emirate aims to address traffic challenges, enhance commuter convenience, and maintain its position as a global leader in smart city initiatives.
With these advancements, Dubai continues to set benchmarks for sustainable and efficient transportation, ensuring both residents and visitors enjoy seamless travel experiences.
