Dubai’s Al Shindagha tunnel project will cut journey times.

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has completed 80 per cent of the Al Khaleej Street Tunnel project, a major part of the wider Al Shindagha project aimed at easing congestion and improving traffic flow across key areas of the emirate.

The Al Khaleej Street Tunnel stretches 1,650 metres from the Infinity Bridge ramp in Deira to the junction of Al Khaleej Street and Al Wuheida Street. The tunnel will feature three lanes in each direction with the capacity to handle around 12,000 vehicles every hour.

The Al Shindagha project is one of Dubai’s biggest road infrastructure developments and covers 13 kilometres across Sheikh Rashid Street, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street. The project includes upgrades to 15 major intersections and is designed to support growing residential communities and major developments including Dubai Islands, Dubai Maritime City and Port Rashid.

RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer said the Al Shindagha project is expected to serve nearly one million people and dramatically reduce travel times from 104 minutes to only 16 minutes by 2030.

Construction teams are currently working around the clock to complete the tunnel by the fourth quarter of this year. Excavation, structural works, tunnel wall cladding and road widening activities are progressing simultaneously, alongside the installation of lighting, drainage and traffic systems.

The project has already recorded nearly eight million work hours without lost-time injuries, reflecting strong safety standards and operational efficiency across construction sites.

As part of Dubai’s urban art initiative, the tunnel will also feature a large-scale mural designed by Emirati artist Maryam Hathboor. Inspired by banknote illustrations, the artwork will showcase Dubai’s skyline and economic growth through detailed mosaic designs integrated throughout the tunnel.

The Al Shindagha project continues to reinforce Dubai’s long-term vision of creating smarter, faster and more connected transport infrastructure across the city.
