Abu Dhabi: The UAE celebrates the International Day of Clean Energy, showcasing its global leadership and launching initiatives against climate change after the successful conclusion of the Year of Sustainability in 2023. The UAE Energy Strategy 2050, adopted last year, aims for climate neutrality in electricity and water by 2050, with goals including tripling renewable energy contribution by 2030 and increasing clean energy’s share in the total energy mix to 30% by 2030.

In 2023, the National Hydrogen Strategy was introduced, emphasizing the UAE’s position as a clean energy leader, stimulating local production capabilities, and supporting the global hydrogen economy. The strategy aims to create economic growth, generate jobs by 2050, and reduce emissions in high-emission sectors by up to 25% by 2031.

On a project level, the UAE inaugurated the Al Dhafra Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant, the world’s largest single-location solar power station with a capacity of 2 gigawatts. In December, the UAE launched the world’s largest concentrated solar power project, part of the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, with a capacity of 950 megawatts.

Internationally, the UAE hosted the COP28 conference, approving the historic “UAE Consensus,” signaling a transition to a fuel-free energy system, aiming for global climate neutrality by 2050. The conference adopted the Global Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Commitment, supported by 130 countries.

In 2023, the UAE continued its commitment to clean energy on a global scale. It announced a financing initiative worth AED 16.5 billion to enhance clean energy capabilities in African countries, supporting the Union 7 development program. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, since 1974, has supported over 75 strategic renewable energy projects worldwide, positively impacting beneficiary countries by providing secure and reliable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, creating job opportunities, and contributing to sustainable development.

Masdar, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, operates globally, with a portfolio exceeding 20 gigawatts and projects in over 40 countries. These projects significantly reduce emissions, equivalent to removing 6.5 million cars from the roads annually. The UAE’s commitment to clean energy reflects its pivotal role in addressing global climate challenges and fostering sustainable development.
