India is set to embark on a massive initiative to install rooftop solar panels on 10 million houses as part of the recently launched scheme, the “Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana” or Prime Minister’s Sunrise Scheme.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that this program will enable every household with a roof to harness solar power, leading to reduced electricity bills and increased self-sufficiency. The initiative is aimed at promoting renewable energy use at the consumer level, providing electricity to low and middle-income individuals through solar rooftop installations.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the scheme offers the potential for additional income through surplus electricity generation. India envisions a widespread adoption of rooftop solar energy and calls for a national campaign to mobilize residential consumers to participate actively.

With India already being the home to the International Solar Alliance, this initiative aligns with the country’s commitment to promoting and utilizing solar energy on a global scale.
