A new report says smart cities are becoming essential for sustainable growth by using advanced technologies to improve infrastructure, public services and quality of life.

DUBAI: Smart cities are emerging as a key driver of economic growth, environmental sustainability and improved quality of life, according to a new report released by the World Governments Summit Organisation in collaboration with Deloitte. The study says smart cities that successfully integrate technology into urban planning will be better prepared to tackle climate challenges, strengthen resilience and support future generations.

Titled Smart Cities: Integrating Technology for Sustainable Urban Development, the report highlights how artificial intelligence, digital twins, the Internet of Things, advanced connectivity and predictive analytics are transforming urban environments. These technologies are helping governments optimise energy use, improve transport systems, strengthen climate resilience and deliver better public services.

Reem Baggash, Deputy Director of the World Governments Summit, said rapid urbanisation, population growth and climate change are increasing pressure on cities worldwide. She noted that governments are prioritising sustainable urban development because technology provides new opportunities to improve resource management, enhance service delivery and build more resilient communities.

The report also identifies five priorities for future urban development, including modernising infrastructure through technology, promoting resource efficiency, increasing citizen participation, building climate resilience and creating healthier places to live. It adds that digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, shared standards and effective governance will be essential to successfully expand smart city initiatives.

According to the report, cities that align technology with sustainability goals will be better positioned to attract investment, create new economic opportunities and remain globally competitive. As governments continue investing in innovation, smart cities are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping more connected, resilient and sustainable urban communities.
