SHARJAH: Sir Bu Nair Island Protected Area has officially joined the prestigious IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, underscoring Sharjah’s commitment to global sustainability.
This recognition, announced by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), highlights Sharjah’s world-class approach to biodiversity conservation and sustainable management.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA, commended the collaborative efforts of local teams, international experts, and evaluators who achieved this milestone. She noted, “This achievement reflects Sharjah’s dedication to environmental protection, as championed by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. It solidifies Sharjah’s role as a leader in sustainability and global environmental innovation.”

The Green List status, valid until December 5, 2029, recognises Sir Bu Nair Island for meeting stringent criteria, including sustainable governance, active community engagement, and comprehensive environmental monitoring. Spanning 13 square kilometres in the Arabian Gulf, 110 kilometres from Sharjah, the island is celebrated for its golden beaches, coral reefs, and thriving marine ecosystems.
Declared a nature reserve in 2000, the island is part of international agreements, including the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage Sites, and the IOSEA Marine Turtle MoU. Its rich biodiversity, including rare seabirds and marine life, makes it a regional model of sustainable conservation.
“This listing is a testament to Sharjah’s strategic commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation,” added Al Suwaidi. “It ensures future generations inherit a balanced, thriving environment while promoting international collaboration in conservation.”
Sir Bu Nair Island’s inclusion in the IUCN Green List is a landmark achievement, further establishing Sharjah as a global hub for environmental sustainability.
