DUBAI: Following the plans set by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the aim is to create a top-notch, sustainable public transport system for everyone in Dubai. This effort is about making life better for people, boosting Dubai’s standing as a hub for global events, and hitting the targets of the Dubai Urban Plan 2040. Under the watch of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a deal to buy 636 new buses of different sizes.

These buses meet European standards for low carbon emissions (Euro 6), including 40 electric buses, which are the first and largest of their kind in the UAE. They will be delivered in 2024 and 2025.

Mattar Al Tayer, head of the RTA, said, “These new buses are part of our plan to upgrade Dubai’s public transport to match the best in the world. We want to offer great services to our riders and support the growing number of people using public buses. This deal shows our commitment to making public transport the top choice for residents, aiming for 25% of all journeys by 2030. To achieve this, we need high-quality transport with wide coverage and integrated systems.”

“The new buses also support the UAE’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and align with Dubai’s Economic Agenda D33, which aims to make Dubai one of the world’s largest urban economies. They fit into our Zero Emissions Strategy, targeting 100% electric and hydrogen-powered public transport buses by 2050,” Al Tayer added.

The deal includes 40 electric buses from Zhongtong, 450 city service buses (400 MAN buses and 50 Zhongtong buses), and 76 double-decker buses from Volvo. These buses will serve busy areas and new neighborhoods, improving coverage and occupancy rates.

Most of the new buses will have a Driver Behaviour Monitoring System to improve safety, an Automated Passenger Counting system to track rider numbers and prevent fare evasion, and an electronic Driver Identity Authentication system. They will also feature comfortable seating, high safety standards, and a sleek, modern design reflecting Dubai’s innovative spirit.

Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency, said, “The new buses meet the latest global standards, including low floors for easy access, bike racks, Wi-Fi, charging points, and smart systems to provide excellent service. The RTA is leading the way with a special fuel consumption testing system to compare different bus types, ensuring financial and environmental sustainability and efficiency.”
