India plans to switch to zero-emission trucks for protection of the environment
Thu 22 Aug 2024NEW DELHI: India is taking a big step to protect the environment by planning to switch to zero-emission trucks. The government’s Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor announced this ambitious goal today.
According to the new “Indian Zero Emission Trucking Policy Advisory,” India could have about 17 million trucks on its roads by 2050 if the economy keeps growing as expected. This increase in trucks could seriously harm the environment. To help meet India’s goal of reaching Net Zero emissions by 2070, the country aims to transition to zero-emission trucks (ZETs) by 2050.
Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the government, explained that moving to ZETs will need both technical know-how and smart policy changes. He said, “We need to build a strong system to support the use of zero-emission trucks in India.”
Hanif Qureshi, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries, shared that 30 new policies are being introduced to speed up the shift to electric trucks across the country.
Sood added that these policies are based on successful models from other countries. They have been carefully reviewed and analyzed by experts to ensure they will work well in India.
