Emirates pilots reduce fuel and emissions during operations; saved 48,000 tonnes of fuel

Dubai: Emirates Airlines has been actively implementing their “Green Operating Procedures” (Green Ops) since 2016, aiming to reduce fuel consumption both on the ground and in-flight while ensuring pilots are integral to these efforts.

In their recent report titled ‘How Emirates pilots reduce fuel emissions during operations’, the airline highlighted their commitment to sustainability. They emphasized the role of their Operations Efficiency Steering Group in minimizing fuel burn and emissions without compromising safety standards. This dedication resulted in a significant achievement for Emirates, with a reduction of 48,000 tonnes in fuel burn and 151,000 tonnes in carbon emissions during the fiscal year 2023-2024, thanks to Green Ops and other strategic initiatives.

Captain Hassan Al Hammadi, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, commended the collective efforts of the team and the pilots. He acknowledged their disciplined approach to adopting eco-friendly practices while maintaining stringent safety protocols.

Emirates has equipped its pilots with advanced tools and applications to monitor and analyze flight performance, enhancing their awareness of fuel efficiency and emissions impact. Captain Al Hammadi also highlighted Emirates’ ongoing commitment to investing in cutting-edge technologies aimed at further reducing their environmental footprint in the aviation sector.

The airline has implemented various operational measures such as optimizing flight speeds, using discretionary extra fuel judiciously, and adopting innovative techniques like Reduced Engine Taxi-In (RETI) and optimizing flight routes. These measures are part of Emirates’ broader strategy to lead sustainable aviation practices, ensuring responsible environmental stewardship alongside operational excellence.
