Dubai expanded green spaces with 216,500 trees in 2024, promoting sustainability and enhancing urban aesthetics.

DUBAI: Dubai Municipality has achieved a major milestone in 2024 by planting 216,500 new trees, a 17% increase in green spaces compared to the previous year. This remarkable achievement reflects an average of 600 trees planted daily, significantly enhancing the emirate’s greenery.

Through its afforestation efforts, the Municipality expanded green spaces by 391.5 hectares (3.9 million square metres), representing a 57% growth from 2023. These initiatives align with the Urban Environment pillar of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.

As part of the Dubai Green Project, 165 beautification projects were implemented, increasing green areas in residential zones, roads, bridges, parks, and family spaces. Over 5.3 million flower seedlings were planted, while 45 million seasonal flowers were replaced in three cycles.

Badr Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency, emphasised, “Our planting projects reflect a commitment to sustainability and enhancing Dubai’s aesthetic appeal. Through innovative urban planning, we aim to expand green spaces, improve air quality, and mitigate climate change impacts.”

Key landscaping projects in 2024 focused on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, and other major streets, as well as residential areas like Al Mizhar and Mirdif. Native trees like Ghaf, Sidr, and Samar were planted alongside ornamental species such as neem, jasmine, and various palms.

Sustainable irrigation systems, relying on 100% recycled water, were introduced to conserve resources and improve efficiency. Additionally, Dubai’s Warsan Nursery produced 48.13 million seedlings, with 98% supporting greening projects.

Since 2011, Dubai’s supervised green spaces have doubled, exceeding 52 million square metres by the end of 2024. The number of trees planted annually has risen dramatically, from 35,666 in 2017 to 216,500 in 2024, underscoring Dubai’s dedication to a greener future.
