The European Commission says the launch of EU UAE strategic partnership talks marks a major step in deepening cooperation and fostering regional stability.
BRUSSELS: The European Commission has hailed the launch of strategic partnership negotiations between the European Union and the United Arab Emirates as a vital step toward strengthening long-term cooperation across multiple sectors. Speaking after the talks officially began in Abu Dhabi on December 11, 2025, a Commission spokesperson called the move a “major strategic milestone” in bilateral relations.
The spokesperson said that the EU’s executive body sees the EU UAE strategic partnership talks as a chance to enhance both political and economic ties in alignment with the EU’s strategy for deepening engagement with the Gulf region. The partnership will focus on areas such as trade, energy, green transition, technology, security, and education, aiming to establish a structured and future-oriented relationship with the UAE.
EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, led the launch of the negotiations during her visit to the UAE. She emphasised that the strategic partnership would not only elevate cooperation but also serve as a model for constructive international dialogue and regional peacebuilding. The Commission has outlined that both sides share mutual interests in global connectivity, energy transition, and digital transformation.
The Commission’s representative expressed confidence in the negotiation process and highlighted the importance of advancing the partnership in a way that contributes to stability, innovation, and shared prosperity in the Middle East and beyond. The EU UAE strategic partnership talks are being framed within the EU’s 2022 strategy for relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council and mark a deliberate effort to move from reactive diplomacy to proactive engagement.
This new direction follows recent developments that have elevated the UAE’s role on the global stage, especially in sustainability, renewable energy, and climate diplomacy. As such, the EU considers the UAE a key partner in shaping effective responses to global challenges. The talks are also seen as a foundation for future cooperation that will reflect shared values, mutual benefits, and a commitment to long-term regional development.
