On Sunday, Denmark witnessed a historic moment as Queen Margrethe II officially stepped down from the throne, passing the mantle to her son Frederik, who was subsequently declared the new king of Denmark by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

The abdication ceremony took place in Copenhagen, where the 83-year-old monarch signed the official declaration marking the end of her remarkable 52-year reign. The event, captured on television from Christiansborg Palace, the seat of the Danish parliament, showcased this significant transition in Danish royalty, as reported by DPA.

Following the abdication, the former crown prince, Frederik, symbolically assumed his mother’s place at the table. As Queen Margrethe left the hall, she expressed her blessing, saying, “God bless the king.” She then returned to Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family.

Queen Margrethe’s decision to step down was announced in her New Year’s speech, surprising the nation. In her address, she explained that a major back operation she underwent in February prompted her to contemplate passing on the responsibility to the next generation. This unexpected announcement resonated deeply with the Danish population, as the New Year’s speech holds special significance in the country.

The smooth transition to King Frederik marks a new chapter in Denmark’s royal history. The abdication underscores the queen’s thoughtful consideration of her health and the continuity of the monarchy. The Danish people now look forward to the reign of King Frederik, hoping for a seamless and prosperous era under his leadership.
