Islamabad’s PIMS hospital achieves Pakistan’s first robotic adrenalectomy using Chinese Toumai robot, marking surgical milestone.

ISLAMABAD: In a major stride for medical science in South Asia, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has successfully performed Islamabad’s first-ever robotic adrenalectomy, using a state-of-the-art Chinese-developed robotic system. The operation marks a transformative moment for Pakistan’s healthcare sector as it embraces robotic surgical technology.

The pioneering procedure was conducted during a Robotic Surgery Master Class at PIMS, overseen by Prof. Dr. Atif Inam Shami, Head of the Department of General Surgery. The team used the advanced “Toumai” surgical robot, a next-generation medical device created in China and designed for precision in minimally invasive operations.

The adrenalectomy was successfully carried out on a female patient, underscoring both the safety and effectiveness of robotic-assisted surgery in Pakistan. Medical officials noted that the successful operation signals the readiness of Pakistani healthcare institutions to adopt cutting-edge surgical techniques.

This development is expected to pave the way for broader adoption of robotic surgeries across the country, enhancing both outcomes and recovery times for patients. It also places Pakistan on the map as one of the emerging adopters of robotic medical innovations in South Asia.

The breakthrough aligns with broader healthcare goals of enhancing surgical precision, reducing patient trauma, and bringing world-class medical advancements to local institutions.
