The GCC strongly condemned the Barakah nuclear plant attack, warning it threatens regional stability, civilian safety and global energy security.
RIYADH: Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi strongly condemned the drone strike targeting the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra region, calling the incident a dangerous escalation with serious regional consequences.
According to official statements, three drones were involved in the attack. UAE air defence systems intercepted two drones, while another reportedly struck an electrical generator located outside the plant’s protected perimeter. Authorities confirmed there were no casualties or radiation leaks following the incident.
Albudaiwi said the Barakah nuclear plant attack represented a clear violation of international laws protecting critical infrastructure and nuclear facilities. He warned that any assault involving nuclear sites could create severe risks for civilians, environmental safety and international energy markets.
The GCC chief stressed that Gulf states fully support the UAE in all actions taken to preserve national security and maintain stability across the region. He added that the safety of citizens, residents and strategic infrastructure remains a top priority for all GCC member states.
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation confirmed that reactor operations at the Barakah facility continue normally under strict safety supervision. Officials also stated that radiation levels remained stable after the incident, with emergency teams conducting precautionary inspections around the site.
Regional analysts say the Barakah nuclear plant attack has intensified concerns about the security of energy infrastructure across the Gulf amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. International observers have also renewed calls for stronger protection measures around nuclear facilities to prevent future threats that could impact regional and global security.
The Barakah nuclear plant attack is now being viewed as one of the most serious security incidents involving critical infrastructure in the UAE this year.
