An iconic set of wheels to be memorialised in Italy!

A car that was parked in the same spot in Italy for 47 years is being turned into a monument.

Angelo Fregolent first parked his Lancia Fulvia 1962 outside the newsagent he ran with his wife, Bertilla Modolo, in the town of Conegliano back in 1974.

The 94-year-old said, “I ran the newsstand under the house for 40 years together with my wife Bertilla, 10 years younger than me. When I opened the business, I was happy to have the Lancia Fulvia parked in front of it because I had the newspapers unloaded in the trunk and then I took them inside.”

But when the couple retired, they left the car in the same spot and it ended up becoming a tourist attraction.

Visitors to Conegliano would take selfies by the abandoned vehicle, and it became an increasingly famous landmark as photos circulated on social media.

However, after almost five decades in the spot, local officials moved the car on October 20, transferring it to the Auto e Moto d’Epoca Motorshow in Padua, where it was on display alongside dozens of other classic cars.

Giovanni Berton – who works in the mechanical vehicle trade sector and is the president of the Serenissima historical car club in Conegliano – said, “The history of the Fulvia has been around the world and we could not remain indifferent. Thus was born the idea of taking it to the car showroom, where many will be able to admire it.”

It was then sent to a workshop in the northeastern city of Vicenza, where the damage sustained from the elements over the last 47 years is being carefully restored.

Once the repairs are complete, the car will be placed outside a local school next to Angelo and Bertilla’s house – meaning they will be able to admire their old whip from their window while tourists congregate for selfies.

Locals were happy to hear the car wasn’t going to be scrapped, as it has become part of the furniture in the town.

Luca Zaia, 42, said, “The car has been parked there since I was going to school.”
