‘Harees’ added to UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Harees becomes the UAE’s fifteenth UNESCO-listed element, joining falconry since 2010. The dish, made from wheat and meat, symbolizes Emirati cultural identity.

Abu Dhabi: The Department of Culture and Tourism Department shared exciting news on December 20, 2023, about Harees, a beloved traditional dish. Harees, a porridge-like food enjoyed during family events and special occasions like weddings and Ramadan, has earned a spot on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This recognition came during UNESCO’s 18th session in Kasane-Botswana, where the UAE led the nomination alongside Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Minister Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi highlighted the UAE’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage and supporting communities in passing down traditions. He emphasized how cultural richness informs the world about the UAE’s history and Arab identity.

Chairman Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak underscored the collaboration between the Culture and Tourism Department and the Ministry of Culture. Since signing the 2003 Convention in 2005, their joint efforts focus on safeguarding UAE heritage. Al Mubarak expressed pride in sharing Emirati cultural identity globally and reaffirmed the commitment to UNESCO collaboration.

This achievement marks the UAE’s fifteenth entry on UNESCO’s lists, starting in 2010 with falconry. Harees, a dish made by cooking wheat and meat for hours, symbolizes Emirati culture and identity.
