Dubai: The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships witnessed a tantalising glimpse at the future of UAE tennis as the country’s next generation of homegrown talent sampled life as a professional on the sidelines of this week’s ATP500 event.

Organised by the UAE Tennis Federation and the ATP, the Tennis Emirates Junior Clinic saw over 20 young tennis prodigies aged from the eight-to-17-years-old train with the Netherlands’ World No. 39 Tallon Griekspoor at Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium.

Griekspoor, who secured his place in the Round of 16 by beating Constant Lestienne 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on Monday, challenged the youngsters on-court and put them through numerous drills and one-on-one matches. The Dutchman was impressed with what he witnessed.

“The talent I saw this morning has been incredible. I would urge all the children to continue to work hard, have fun and surround themselves with a group of close, supportive individuals that can continue to push them to be better and never give up,” said Griekspoor.

Mohammed Al Ali, an 11-year-old who attends Abdul Jaleel Al Fahim School in Abu Dhabi, relished his morning with Griekspoor.

“Just being able to play with and against a professional tennis player is a dream come true for me. I really enjoyed myself this morning and received a lot of tips regarding my groundstroke. I can’t wait to be a professional tennis player in the future,” said Al Ali.

Established in 1983, the UAE Tennis Federation’s mission is to promote tennis across the country, develop and nurture national talent, and oversee the organisation of all national and international tournaments and events across the Emirates.
