Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled plans to introduce a new toll gate, or Salik, at the Business Bay Crossing, in line with its strategic efforts to enhance road networks and integrate public transport services. The move underscores the RTA’s commitment to promoting public transport and decreasing reliance on private vehicles.

Additionally, the RTA will install the Al Safa South Toll Gate on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Meydan and Umm Al Sheif Streets. A unified toll tariff will be implemented for crossings between the two Safa Gates within a one-hour timeframe.

These initiatives aim to optimize traffic flows by diverting vehicles to alternative routes like Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Ras Al Khor Road, and Al Manama Street. The RTA encourages the use of alternative Creek crossings, such as the Infinity Bridge and Al Shindagha Tunnel, to alleviate congestion on main routes.

The new toll gates are scheduled to be operational by November 2024, coinciding with the completion of the Al Khail Road Improvement Project. This comprehensive project includes the construction of intersections, braided ramps, and rapid traffic solutions on Al Khail Road, along with enhancements to surface intersections.

Director General Mattar Al Tayer highlighted the toll gates as part of transport policies aimed at optimizing road infrastructure and public transport projects. He emphasized their role in redistributing traffic across the network, reducing travel times, and encouraging mass transit use.

Previous toll gates have already proven effective, reducing travel time by 6 million hours annually and increasing mass transit users by 9 million riders per year. The introduction of toll gates at Business Bay Crossing and Al Safa South is based on international consultants’ studies to maintain service levels, manage traffic volumes, and control congestion.

In terms of overall infrastructure, the RTA has completed significant projects, including the Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, and an expanded bus network. Plans for the future include increasing cycling tracks, completing the Dubai Metro Blue Line, and advancing road projects to further improve transportation in Dubai.
