Elon Musk, a billionaire computer entrepreneur, has started an artificial intelligence (AI) firm to compete with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, which he has criticized for being “woke.”

The purpose of the new business, according to xAI on Wednesday, is to “understand the true nature of the universe”.

“What are the most fundamental unanswered questions?” xAI stated on Twitter, which is owned by Musk.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk declared in a tweet that his business would work to “understand reality.”

According to the firm website, xAI’s personnel includes former workers from OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Tesla, DeepMind, and the University of Toronto.

The corporation is receiving advice from Dan Hendrycks, head of the Center for AI Safety, according to the website. Hendrycks published an open letter earlier this year warning that AI might endanger humans, a worry shared by Musk.

Musk participated in the 2015 co-founding of OpenAI but left the San Francisco-based business in 2018 due to what he has called a conflict of interest involving his AI work at electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

Musk has since charged that the company’s ground-breaking language bot ChatGPT is skewed in favor of left-wing and politically correct viewpoints because he has targeted the “woke mind virus” in society.

Since purchasing Twitter for $44 billion in October, Musk, a self-described adamant supporter of free speech, has relaxed moderation standards and allowed right-wing accounts that had previously been suspended, which critics claim has increased hate speech and extremism on the platform.

Musk announced in April that he planned to introduce a competitive chatbot by the name of TruthGPT.
