SHARJAH: The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) has completed a remarkable mangrove planting programme in AlQurm Protected Area, Khor Kalba, solidifying its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.
In collaboration with Emirates Nature-WWF, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and Bee’ah, 11,600 mangrove seedlings were planted over two weeks. This effort aligns with the UAE’s ambitious goal of planting 100 million mangroves by 2030 as part of its Net Zero by 2050 Strategy.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA, highlighted the initiative’s impact: “The programme showcases Sharjah’s leadership in sustainability, supporting national climate goals. It reflects the power of community and government collaboration to protect our natural heritage.”
She emphasised the programme’s integrated approach, focusing on long-term care and monitoring to ensure the planted mangroves thrive. Additionally, AlQurm Protected Area serves as a hub for biodiversity conservation, research, and eco-tourism, further enhancing its ecological importance.
Laila Mostafa Abdullatif, Director-General of Emirates Nature-WWF, praised the joint efforts, saying, “Nature is our strongest ally in combating climate change. Restoring mangroves boosts carbon absorption and strengthens ecosystems. Initiatives like Priceless Planet by Mastercard contribute significantly to these goals.”
The mangrove planting programme represents a broader strategy to expand green coverage in Sharjah, fostering environmental awareness and encouraging community participation. This initiative not only safeguards vital ecosystems but also underlines the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
By enhancing mangrove habitats, the project contributes to reducing carbon footprints, protecting coastal areas, and promoting biodiversity. With ongoing monitoring and care, the planted mangroves will thrive as a natural shield against climate change.
