NEW YORK: António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, pledges to reaffirm the commitment of UN to supporting efforts for peace and a more stable, and equitable world. In his official message marking the end of 2024 and welcoming the new year, Guterres highlighted the opportunity for 2025 to be a fresh start, one where the global community is united rather than fragmented.
Guterres acknowledged the challenges faced in 2024, noting that hope had been scarce due to ongoing wars, widespread suffering, and displacement. These conflicts have deepened divisions, fostered inequality, and generated a climate of mistrust. In light of this, he called for global cooperation to address these issues and work towards a more harmonious future.
The Secretary-General also drew attention to the alarming rise in global temperatures, particularly in 2024, with record-high temperatures marking the last decade. He urged countries to commit to reducing emissions and accelerating the transition to a sustainable, safer future.
A significant part of Guterres’ message focused on the power of activists, humanitarian leaders, and youth, who are driving change despite immense obstacles. These groups, particularly in developing nations, are advocating for climate justice and financial equity to address the needs of the most vulnerable communities.
Additionally, Guterres referenced the Future Charter, adopted in September, which pushes for peacebuilding through disarmament, gender and youth empowerment, financial reform, and a renewed focus on human rights and international law. He emphasised the need for technology to prioritise people’s rights over profit, ensuring it serves humanity and not unchecked algorithms.
