ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi has launched its first freshwater pearl oyster aquaculture project, marking a significant step towards sustainable aquaculture in the region. The initiative is part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainable Aquaculture Policy and is spearheaded by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

An extension of the Abu Dhabi Pearls Centre, established in Mirfa in 2007, the project aims to culture new oyster species, including Chinese and Indian oysters. These oysters can produce 15 to 20 pearls each, with varying shapes, sizes, and colours.

The new aquaculture facility features 10 indoor units with a production capacity of 10,000 oysters per year. It also includes a quarantine area and research and administrative facilities. So far, approximately 8,500 freshwater oysters have been produced.

Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “The Abu Dhabi Pearls Centre is the first facility in the Middle East to culture freshwater oyster pearls.” She emphasised the role of the project in fostering research on sustainable oyster farming, strengthening Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in this field, and supporting national talent development.

Dr. Al Dhaheri also revealed that EAD has successfully cultured local pearl oysters at the Mirfa centre, developing the expertise to produce high-quality, sustainably farmed pearls. The facility’s operations have since expanded to include new oyster species, with production expected to hit 10,000 oysters annually by the end of 2024.

A commitment to sustainability is at the heart of the project, with water from the farming units being reused for irrigation, minimising waste and promoting water conservation. This aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader sustainability goals and environmental impact reduction efforts.
