Dubai-based Dr Knee will lead Malawi’s first-ever knee surgery camp, creating a medical model for Africa and expanding UAE’s healthcare diplomacy.

DUBAI: Dubai is extending its global impact in healthcare as renowned UAE-based orthopaedic surgeon Dr Azam Badar Khan — widely known as “Dr Knee” — prepares to launch Malawi’s first-ever knee surgery camp in January 2026. The initiative marks a milestone in African medical outreach and reflects Dubai’s rising status as a hub for humanitarian healthcare.

Running from 19 to 24 January, the camp will be held across LMJ Hospital in Blantyre and LSF Hospital in Lilongwe. It will offer advanced knee procedures — including total replacements, arthroscopy, and corrective surgeries — to patients who have long lacked access to specialised orthopaedic care.

The announcement follows a mission last December where Dr Knee and his team evaluated over 400 patients in just four days. Many suffered from chronic conditions like untreated osteoarthritis and long-standing injuries — evidence of what he calls a “silent epidemic of mobility loss” in underserved regions.

“Malawi doesn’t just have a medical gap — it has decades of unaddressed knee disease,” said Dr Knee. “This camp is about delivering life-changing surgeries and building a long-term healthcare foundation.”

The initiative also includes training and skills transfer to local doctors, with plans to expand the model across Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Uganda. It is part of a broader campaign titled “Walk Again with Dr Knee”, which also spans India and the UAE and launches in Dubai this February.

Dubai’s support infrastructure has played a critical role in scaling this mission. As the UAE celebrates Eid Al Etihad, the camp stands as a powerful example of cross-border collaboration and medical diplomacy.

“This is not an isolated camp — it’s the start of a continental blueprint,” added Dr Knee. “Each country we reach helps us extend a network of care where mobility is restored and lives are transformed.”
