GENEVA: The World Health Organisation – WHO – has expressed regret over the decision of US to withdraw from the organisation, urging reconsideration.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, WHO emphasised its vital global role, highlighting the potential consequences of the US departure. The organisation stated, “We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.”
The announcement comes amidst heightened global challenges, where WHO remains pivotal in combating health crises. The organisation stressed that it addresses the root causes of diseases, strengthens health systems, and responds to emergencies, often stepping into dangerous areas where others cannot operate.
The US, historically one of WHO’s largest contributors, has been instrumental in funding and supporting global health initiatives. Withdrawal could have significant implications, potentially disrupting programmes aimed at combating diseases, bolstering health systems, and providing aid in emergencies worldwide.
This decision also raises concerns about the future of global health collaborations, as WHO relies heavily on member nations to achieve its goals. The US departure might impact efforts to tackle pressing issues such as disease outbreaks, vaccine distribution, and pandemic preparedness.
While the Trump administration has cited disagreements and concerns over WHO’s handling of certain crises, critics argue that withdrawing could undermine the US’s ability to influence global health policies.
As discussions continue, the global community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritises the health and security of millions. WHO remains committed to its mission, urging the US to reconsider and maintain its partnership for the greater good.
