SHARJAH: The first-ever Sharjah Literature Festival has officially wrapped up, leaving a lasting impression with its theme, ‘Emirati Tales Inspire the Future.’ For five days, Sharjah buzzed with the energy of writers, thinkers, publishers, and book lovers, all coming together to celebrate the beauty of Emirati storytelling and cultural heritage.
Hosted by the Sharjah Book Authority and the Emirates Publishers Association, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and guided by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, the festival shone a spotlight on Emirati authors and publishers. It also cemented Sharjah’s reputation as a literary and cultural hub in the region.
The event was nothing short of spectacular. 29 notable speakers, 12 moderators, and 20 lively discussions tackled everything from the roots of Emirati literature to its bright future. Set against the picturesque backdrop of University City Hall, the festival truly brought Emirati creativity to the forefront.
But it wasn’t all talk! There were 9 hands-on workshops for all ages, covering Arabic calligraphy, storytelling, candle making, and even space exploration. Visitors also enjoyed 25 mesmerising performances, including a piano recital by Iman Al Hashimi, the UAE’s first female composer.
To top it off, a book fair featuring 41 Emirati publishers was a hit, alongside unique shopping spots and food options from 10 restaurants.
Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of the Emirates Publishers Association, said it best: “This festival exceeded all expectations, reflecting our passion for literature and culture. It’s only the beginning of something great.”
As this inaugural edition comes to a close, it leaves behind a rich tapestry of stories, ideas, and connections. With excitement building, the stage is set for future editions that promise to be even bigger and better.
