UAE rulers release over 6,500 inmates as part of 54th Eid Al Etihad celebrations, reflecting focus on social cohesion and rehabilitation.
ABU DHABI: In a significant humanitarian gesture, rulers across the United Arab Emirates have ordered the release of over 6,500 inmates from correctional and punitive institutions to mark the 54th Eid Al Etihad. The pardons reflect the nation’s ongoing commitment to rehabilitation, social harmony, and family unity.
The UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, led the initiative by ordering the release of 2,937 inmates. His directive also includes covering financial penalties incurred by the inmates, aiming to ease their return to society and support their families during the national celebrations.
In Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in his role as Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, pardoned 2,025 prisoners of different nationalities. This initiative, as explained by Dubai’s Attorney General, Chancellor Essam Issa Al-Humaidan, underscores His Highness’s commitment to giving individuals a fresh start and fostering social reintegration.
Other emirates also followed suit. In Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi approved the release of 366 inmates, recognising good conduct and behaviour. Similarly, Ajman Ruler, His Highness Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, pardoned 225 inmates, aiming to spread joy and support rehabilitation.
In Fujairah, 129 prisoners were released under the directive of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, further highlighting the country’s unified commitment to reintegration and family unity. Fujairah Police Chief Major General Mohammed Ahmed Al Kaabi praised the decision, calling it a “noble humanitarian vision.”
Ras Al Khaimah also joined the nationwide initiative. Ruler His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi ordered the release of 854 prisoners, with implementation directed by the Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi.
This unified gesture from all UAE rulers not only marks a deeply symbolic celebration of the 54th Eid Al Etihad, but also embodies the country’s values of compassion, second chances, and commitment to social cohesion.
