The Algeria UAE airspace closure takes effect on September 11, covering UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft while temporarily exempting commercial flights serving Algiers.

ALGIERS: The Algeria UAE airspace closure takes effect on September 11 after Algerian authorities announced restrictions on UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft following a sharp deterioration in relations between the two countries.

Algeria’s Ministry of National Defence announced the measure on September 10, saying the country’s airspace would close from 00:00 on September 11, 2026 to aircraft registered in the UAE, whether travelling to or from the country.

However, there is an important exception for commercial travellers.

Will UAE commercial flights to Algeria continue?

Yes, temporarily.

UAE civilian commercial flights arriving at or departing from Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers are exempt from the restriction until the end of 2026, when the current agreement expires.

This means the announcement should not be interpreted as an immediate suspension of every passenger flight connecting the UAE and Algeria.

Travellers should nevertheless monitor their airline’s latest schedule before departure because the wider diplomatic situation could affect future services.

Why has Algeria closed its airspace?

The decision came hours after Algeria announced that it was severing diplomatic relations with the UAE.

Algeria’s Foreign Ministry said it had exhausted efforts to preserve bilateral relations and accused the UAE of what it described as increasingly provocative and hostile actions. It did not identify a specific incident that immediately triggered the diplomatic break.

Relations between the two countries had already been strained by disagreements over several regional issues.

The UAE responded by expressing hope that Algeria’s decision to sever diplomatic relations would prove to be temporary. Its Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasised the ties between the Algerian and Emirati peoples.

What does the restriction cover?

The Algeria UAE airspace closure applies to UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft travelling in either direction, subject to the temporary Algiers commercial-flight exemption.

That distinction could affect private, business and other UAE-registered aviation differently from scheduled commercial passenger services operating under the exemption.

For UAE residents planning travel to Algeria, the immediate priority is therefore to check directly with their airline rather than assume their scheduled flight has been cancelled.

The exemption is currently scheduled to remain in place until the end of December 2026. What happens to commercial connectivity after that will depend on further decisions by the authorities.

The Algeria UAE airspace closure represents one of the first significant practical consequences of the diplomatic rupture, extending the dispute from political relations into aviation.

Impact to expect

Uncertainty. Commercial flights to Algiers can continue under the temporary exemption, but passengers and businesses may face greater uncertainty over UAE-Algeria air connectivity beyond 2026.
