Dubai Government chiefs participate in the ‘Planting 20,000 Trees’ initiative to expand green spaces and promote sustainability across the emirate.

DUBAI: Senior leaders from Dubai Government entities joined community members, students, and volunteers in the “Planting 20,000 Trees” initiative organised by Dubai Municipality and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA). Held at the Quranic Garden in Al Khawaneej, the event marks the 20th anniversary of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum assuming leadership of Dubai and supports the Emirate’s expanded green and sustainable vision.

The initiative was supported by Furjan Dubai, the community partner responsible for coordinating resident participation and managing sapling distribution points. Directors General and CEOs from key government entities came together to plant a variety of ornamental, fruit‑bearing, and shrub saplings across parks and neighbourhoods to enhance urban landscaping and promote a healthier environment.

Among those participating were His Excellency Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary‑General of the Executive Council of Dubai; Her Excellency Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of the Community Development Authority; His Excellency Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al‑Falasi, Director General of the Dubai Government Human Resources Department; and Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director General of Dubai Municipality, alongside other senior officials.

The planting event supports the Urban Environment pillar of the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, reflecting Dubai’s long‑term commitment to expanding green spaces, sustainability and enhancing residents’ quality of life. Participants highlighted the collaboration between government entities and the wider community, reinforcing a shared environmental responsibility that will benefit future generations.

Dubai Municipality provided a range of saplings, ensuring that green spaces planted are both sustainable and visually appealing. Parks designated for planting include Al Barsha South, Al Barsha Pond Park, Nakheel Park, Al Mizhar Second, Blossoms Park, Al Safa Park, Umm Suqeim, Al Quoz Pond Park, and Al Warqa’a 3. The municipality also uses smart irrigation and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to support efficient water use and healthy growth, alongside long‑term care plans, monitoring and a dedicated community hotline.

KHDA played a key role by facilitating the participation of schools and universities, coordinating sapling deliveries and ensuring safe, organised tree‑planting activities. Students and educational communities were actively encouraged to take part, fostering environmental awareness and sustainability values.

Furjan Dubai helped mobilise residents, manage sapling collection points and promote the initiative through digital channels. Volunteers contributed to raising environmental awareness across neighbourhoods, further strengthening community engagement.

The Planting 20,000 Trees initiative embodies His Highness’s vision of sustainability as a cornerstone of Dubai’s development. It aims to create a lasting environmental legacy, empower communities to adopt greener practices, and support the emirate’s aspirations to become one of the world’s most sustainable cities.
