Our bodies have 206 bones that make up our framework and keep us moving. These bones, made of calcium, minerals, and collagen, are quite resilient and can heal themselves if they break. Teeth, however, are a different story. They’re made from similar materials and are the hardest part of our body thanks to their enamel. But unlike bones, teeth can’t heal or regrow on their own. A drug is being tested that lets adults regrow teeth.

This might soon change, though. Japanese researchers are developing a new drug that could help grow new teeth, with human trials set to begin in September.

The aim is to help those who have lost teeth, a problem that current treatments don’t permanently solve. The researchers are excited about the potential impact of this new drug.

The breakthrough comes from studying an antibody called Uterine Sensitization–Associated Gene-1 (USAG-1), which has been shown to prevent teeth from growing in animals like ferrets and mice. In 2021, scientists discovered that a monoclonal antibody, often used in cancer treatments, could block USAG-1 from interfering with proteins essential for tooth growth.

While the researchers were optimistic, they weren’t sure if it would be enough to actually regrow teeth. Since ferrets have dental patterns similar to humans, the results look promising.

If successful, this drug could revolutionise dental care by allowing us to regrow teeth, offering new hope for anyone dealing with tooth loss.
