Widow’s Bay enters the main Emmy Awards ceremony with eight wins already secured and could break the single-season comedy record tonight.
LOS ANGELES: Widow’s Bay enters the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14 with an opportunity to make television history after already collecting eight trophies during the earlier awards ceremonies in Los Angeles. The Apple TV horror comedy now needs six more victories to set a new record for the most Emmy wins by a comedy in a single season.
The series arrived at this year’s awards with 19 nominations, placing it behind The Pitt, which leads with 25, and Hacks, which has 24. But its strong early performance has transformed it into one of the biggest shows to watch during the main ceremony.

Why could Widow’s Bay make history?
The show’s eight early victories included awards for cinematography, sound, music and production design, while Betty Gilpin won for guest actress in a comedy.
That gives the series significant momentum heading into the televised ceremony, where major categories including outstanding comedy series and lead acting honours will be decided.
Widow’s Bay faces strong competition for outstanding comedy series from Hacks, Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.
Despite that competition, the supernatural comedy is widely viewed as a serious contender after emerging as one of television’s breakout programmes of 2026.

Could Matthew Rhys also make Emmy history?
Matthew Rhys provides another potential record-breaking storyline.
The actor is nominated for lead actor in a comedy for Widow’s Bay and lead actor in a limited or anthology series for The Beast in Me. If he wins both categories, he could become the first performer in Emmy history to collect two lead acting awards in the same year.
Rhys is considered particularly competitive in the comedy category, while co-star Kate O’Flynn is also among the programme’s major acting contenders.
When are the 2026 Emmy Awards?
The main Emmy ceremony takes place at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, September 14. Mariska Hargitay will host, with the ceremony airing live on NBC and streaming on Peacock from 8pm ET.
The Pitt remains a favourite in drama, while Hacks enters its final Emmy run with a record 24 nominations for a comedy. But after its eight early victories, Widow’s Bay could provide one of the night’s biggest stories.
Whether it reaches the record or falls short, its first-season awards performance has already established the series as one of this year’s major television successes.
Impact to expect
Momentum. A record-breaking night could significantly expand the show’s international audience and strengthen Apple TV’s position in the increasingly competitive global streaming market.
