UAE exhibition explores the Arab legacy in Spain, showcasing Andalusian heritage through architecture, history and cross-cultural dialogue.
RAS AL KHAIMAH: A cultural celebration titled ‘The Arab Legacy in Spain’ has opened in Ras Al Khaimah, highlighting the profound influence of Arab-Islamic civilisation on Spanish heritage through an immersive exhibition of architecture, art, music and Andalusian cuisine. Organised by The Design Gallery in partnership with the Spanish Embassy, the two-week event explores centuries of cross-cultural exchange.
The exhibition, inaugurated in Al-Rifaa, was attended by dignitaries including Mohamed Al Nuaimi, Chairman of RAK Chamber, and features 26 curated photographs and artworks. Notable contributions include sculptures by Irish artist Joseph McKeever and insights from Spanish writer Dr. Ino Ewart, who emphasised the architectural brilliance of Andalusia from the 8th to 15th centuries.
At the heart of the showcase is the enduring legacy of Andalusian architecture, known for its spiritual aesthetics, Arabic motifs, geometric patterns, and climate-responsive design. Visitors are offered a visual journey through historic sites such as the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the Alcázar of Seville, which reflect the creativity and harmony of Islamic civilisation in Europe.
The exhibition presents Córdoba — the capital of the Caliphate — as a beacon of intellectual and cultural life during the Arab rule of Spain from 711 to 1492. At its peak, Córdoba was the largest city in Europe, and one of the leading centres for science, arts and commerce in the Mediterranean world.
Through historical context and artistic interpretation, the event fosters a renewed appreciation of the shared cultural heritage between the Arab world and Spain, underscoring enduring bonds built on mutual respect, innovation, and coexistence.
