Emirati driver Rashid Al Dhaheri made history as the first MENA racer to win a Formula Regional race, taking victory at Yas Marina Circuit.

ABU DHABI: Emirati racing prodigy Rashid Al Dhaheri claimed a historic home victory at Yas Marina Circuit in the opening round of the 2026 Formula Regional Middle East Trophy. The 18-year-old became the first driver from the MENA region to win a race in the Formula Regional category, marking a milestone moment for UAE motorsport.

The championship’s opening weekend featured 32 drivers from 11 teams and introduced the all-new Tatuus T-326 car, equipped with advanced aerodynamics, Pirelli tyres, and a Toyota 1.6-litre engine. Al Dhaheri adapted swiftly, placing second in practice and clinching a pole position in the second qualifying session.

He started strong in Race 1, finishing second, and worked his way from 11th to fifth in Race 2 under a reverse grid format. The highlight came in Race 3, where Al Dhaheri started from pole and crossed the finish line first, celebrating with his R-ace GP team and a cheering home crowd.

“Winning here at Yas Marina, where it all began for me, is a dream come true,” said Al Dhaheri. “This trophy belongs to everyone who supported me.”

The second round of the Formula Regional Middle East Trophy returns to Yas Marina Circuit from 23rd to 25th January, with Al Dhaheri now leading the championship. The series will then head to Dubai and conclude in Qatar, with the young Emirati racer eyeing further victories.
