According to agencies, Google lays off over 200 employees from its ‘Core’ team staff. Some roles will move to India and Mexico to reduce costs.

The Core unit at Google builds flagship products and ensures user safety online. Asim Husain, VP of Google Developer Ecosystem, announced the layoffs, calling it the biggest planned reduction this year.

The company plans to maintain its global presence while expanding in high-growth locations. Alphabet has been cutting its headcount since 2023, with recent layoffs in Flutter, Dart, Python, real estate, and finance departments. In the finance department, employees were let go in treasury, business services, and revenue cash operations.

Earlier in January, Google let go of hundreds across various teams, including its engineering, hardware and assistant teams as the company shifted focus to build its artificial intelligence capabilities.
