NAGOYA (Japan): The UAE Asian Games team officially joined Asia’s biggest multi-sport gathering as the country’s flag was carried into the opening ceremony of the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games in Japan on September 19, 2026.
UAE national fencing team members Al Hayam Saif Al Balooshi and Faris Al Balooshi carried the national flag during the athletes’ parade, leading the UAE delegation in one of the ceremony’s most prominent moments.
The UAE has sent 165 athletes to the Games as the country looks to build its presence across Asian sport. H.E. Dr Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports, Vice President of the UAE Olympic Committee and Chairman of the Executive Office, attended the opening ceremony alongside senior UAE sporting and diplomatic officials.
Japan’s Emperor Naruhito formally declared the 20th Asian Games open at Nagoya’s Mizuho stadium. The ceremony combined Japanese culture, music, dance and technology, while athletes from across Asia joined the traditional parade of participating delegations.
Around 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions are taking part in 43 sports during the Games, which continue until October 4. The competition programme features 469 medal events, making Aichi-Nagoya 2026 one of Asia’s largest sporting gatherings.
The ceremony was presented under the concept “Harmonic Heart Beat”, with performances highlighting unity and Asia’s cultural diversity. The event also marked Japan’s third time hosting the Asian Games, following Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.
For the UAE delegation, attention now turns firmly towards competition. Officials have been reviewing athletes’ preparations and support arrangements as national teams begin their campaigns across the Games.
The country’s participation has already produced a milestone through modern pentathlete Abdullah Abdulrahman, whose appearance marked the UAE’s first participation in modern pentathlon at an Asian Games.
The UAE Asian Games team will compete against some of the continent’s strongest sporting nations over the coming days, with athletes seeking results across individual and team competitions.
The Games also offer UAE athletes valuable exposure to elite continental competition as the country’s sporting federations continue developing pathways for athletes competing internationally.
