UAE supports Sam Altman to transform the country into AI testing hub
Fri 16 Feb 2024Dubai: In the world of AI, UAE aims to lead in testing and regulating artificial intelligence technology, aligning with OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman’s recent statements.
Echoing Altman’s vision of the UAE as a “hub for pragmatic regulation,” UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Omar Al Olama, affirmed the country’s commitment to this endeavor. He sees the UAE as a significant contender in the AI arena and is determined to realize this potential.
Altman, who is engaging investors in the Middle East, proposed the UAE as a global “regulatory sandbox” for AI experimentation, suggesting it could pioneer global regulations on AI use.
Despite concerns about the UAE’s ties to China, particularly from the US, the UAE remains steadfast in its commitment to its American partnerships. Al Olama emphasized the UAE’s strong relationship with the US, noting that its technological infrastructure is largely built on American foundations.

The UAE’s AI ambitions have been bolstered by a significant increase in tech workers since 2021. With a workforce of 120,000 individuals in AI and related fields as of September, up from 30,000 just two years ago, the UAE is poised to accelerate its AI initiatives.
