Abu Dhabi: The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) announced a significant milestone in sustainability during the Year of Sustainability. They designated nine key biodiversity areas (KBAs) in the UAE, recognized globally for their importance in protecting endangered plants and animals.
President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reviewed this project during a meeting on World Environment Day. The KBAs include areas like the Arabian Oryx Protected Area and Marawah Marine Area, home to many endangered species.
This achievement showcases the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation. It reflects efforts to create a unified approach to environmental challenges. The Ministry collaborated with the International Union for Conservation of Nature to identify these areas.
These KBAs are vital for preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. They offer protection for endangered species like the Arabian Oryx and Dugong (sea cows). Some sites are also essential for reptiles like Geckos.
The designation of these KBAs contributes to raising the proportion of protected areas in the UAE, ensuring the conservation of biodiversity. The International Union for Conservation of Nature recognizes the importance of these areas in protecting global biodiversity.
Overall, these KBAs play a crucial role in preserving nature, supporting ecosystems, and providing essential resources for future generations. They demonstrate the UAE’s leadership in sustainability and environmental conservation.
