ABU DHABI: The UAE is transforming its deserts into thriving green oases, championing green tourism to become a leader in sustainable travel.
The World’s Coolest Winter campaign returns for its fifth season, themed “Green Tourism.” Launched by the Ministry of Economy, the campaign promotes agritourism by encouraging visits to farms and agricultural sites, supporting eco-friendly travel experiences. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s Tourism Strategy 2031, led by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to position the UAE as a top global tourism hub.
From pristine beaches and lush nature reserves to vast deserts and scenic mountains, the UAE invites tourists to explore its natural wonders while promoting sustainability. Legal frameworks protect biodiversity, and conservation projects, like the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment’s “UAE’s Natural Wonders” project, support the growth of eco-tourism.
Efforts like the “Dubai Can” initiative, launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, encourage resource conservation and reduce single-use plastics. Dubai’s Sustainable Tourism Initiative enforces 19 sustainability criteria for hotels, ensuring responsible operations.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism promotes sustainable hospitality, offering partners energy audits and carbon measurement systems. Similarly, Sharjah’s Tourism Authority prioritises sustainable practices in its tourism model.
This unified approach has propelled the UAE to 18th globally on the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Travel and Tourism Development Index, a leap of seven positions since 2019. Advanced technologies drive the UAE’s mission for climate neutrality by 2050, with digital transformation enhancing tourism revenue and supporting local businesses.
As eco-tourism grows, the UAE’s preserved marine and wildlife reserves continue to attract visitors. By blending nature, heritage, and modern tourism, the UAE showcases its dedication to responsible travel, offering tourists a chance to explore while preserving its rich biodiversity.
