ABU DHABI: The UAE has launched a polar research project as part of its strategy to strengthen its role in global polar research and presence. Announced during the UAE Government’s Annual Meetings 2024, the initiative aims to enhance the country’s standing in scientific, technological, and environmental fields.
The project, developed through collaboration among various government bodies and universities, focuses on setting up the Polar Research Center at Khalifa University. This center will serve as a hub for conducting critical research in polar science, as well as fostering international partnerships and signing treaties that align with polar exploration efforts. One key goal is to prepare Emirati scientists for participation in global polar missions.

The initiative includes an ambitious plan to support Emiratis in contributing to international research. Two Emiratis are set to embark on an Antarctic mission on November 7th, with another team scheduled to head to the Arctic in 2025, marking the UAE’s expanding presence at both poles. This effort highlights the country’s commitment to addressing global climate challenges, advancing scientific knowledge, and inspiring future generations in the sciences.
The project also aims to build the UAE’s scientific capabilities, strengthen its soft power, and contribute to global climate action. The government has already approved treaties necessary for polar research, and the UAE has been invited to participate in international polar programs, such as the Antarctica InSync program and the Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. These steps reflect the UAE’s growing leadership in environmental and climate science, aiming to make a lasting impact on the global scientific community.
