New Delhi: India is gearing up to host two significant Antarctic meetings this month: the 26th Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP 26) and the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM 46). These 10-day meetings, scheduled to take place in Kochi from May 20th, aim to foster global dialogue on environmental protection, scientific collaboration, and cooperation in Antarctica.

India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences announced the participation of 60 countries, with a total of 350 delegates and experts expected to attend. While 56 countries are parties to the Antarctic Treaty, 27 non-consultative parties, although not involved in decision-making, are also invited.

These meetings hold significant importance in safeguarding Antarctica’s delicate ecosystem and promoting scientific research in the region, according to the Ministry. As annual gatherings convened under the Antarctic Treaty System, they provide a platform for stakeholders to address pressing environmental, scientific, and governance issues in Antarctica.

India, with its three research stations in Antarctica – Dakshin Gangotri established in 1983, Maitri, and Bharati opened in 1989 and 2012 respectively – plays a vital role in Antarctic research and conservation efforts.

Dr. M Ravichandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, emphasized India’s commitment to meaningful knowledge exchange and expertise sharing during these meetings. He highlighted the country’s dedication to advancing shared goals of environmental conservation and scientific research in the Antarctic region.

As India prepares to host these crucial Antarctic gatherings, it underscores the nation’s role as a responsible stakeholder in preserving Antarctica’s pristine environment and promoting international cooperation for the benefit of scientific exploration and environmental protection.
