DUBAI: Dubai Reef, a groundbreaking initiative under Dubai Can, has hit a new milestone with the completion of its first 1,000 reef modules. This achievement represents a significant leap in the project’s mission to foster marine biodiversity and advance ecological sustainability in Dubai’s waters.

Launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Reef plans to deploy a total of 20,000 purpose-built reef modules over three years. The pilot phase began in April 2024, with the deployment of the first modules scheduled for late November 2024. These modules, varied in size, will be installed across four clusters at depths of 15-25 metres, creating unique habitats for a range of marine species, including reef fish, corals, anemones, sponges, and molluscs.

Construction of these modules began in August 2024. The modules, fabricated by HaejooX on a biofuel-powered site, utilise durable, marine-life-supporting materials that align with environmentally friendly practices. Director-General of DECCA, Ahmed Mohammed bin Thani, noted, “This milestone reflects the power of collaboration and innovation in achieving our environmental goals, maintaining Dubai’s natural resources, and supporting ecological protection.”

Sheikh Dr. Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Executive Director of Dubai Maritime Authority, praised the efforts to establish Dubai’s reputation in marine sustainability, saying, “Dubai Reef supports our mission to build an integrated marine ecosystem that strengthens Dubai’s blue economy and reinforces its global standing in marine innovation.”
