DUBAI: The UAE has introduced a new basic health insurance scheme for private sector and domestic workers across the country who do not currently have coverage. The move, set to come into effect on January 1, aims to ensure that all workers, particularly in the northern emirates, have access to essential healthcare services.
The new system will extend the health insurance provisions already implemented in Abu Dhabi and Dubai to employees in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah. Previously, health insurance was only mandatory in certain emirates, leaving workers in other areas without protection.
The basic health insurance package will cost Dh320 per year and will cover workers up to the age of 64. For those over this age, a medical disclosure form will be required, alongside recent medical reports. This ensures that older workers with existing health conditions receive the appropriate level of care.
This development is a significant step towards achieving universal healthcare coverage in the UAE and providing more comprehensive protection for workers. With the roll-out of this plan, the country is set to improve the well-being of a large segment of its workforce, making healthcare more accessible and affordable for everyone.
