Dubai begins building two Palm Jumeirah pedestrian bridges, set for completion in 2027, to improve safety and reduce traffic delays by 50%

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in partnership with Dubai Holding Community Management, has started construction of two pedestrian bridges on Palm Jumeirah.

The project aims to improve pedestrian safety, reduce traffic congestion and strengthen connectivity across the popular residential and tourism destination. Both bridges are scheduled for completion in 2027.

Where Will the New Bridges Be Located?

The first pedestrian bridge will be built near Shoreline, close to the entrance of Palm Jumeirah. Authorities expect to complete it by June 2027. The second bridge will connect areas around Golden Mile and its retail outlets, with completion scheduled for October 2027.

Each bridge will span approximately 40 metres and feature lifts to improve accessibility for senior citizens and People of Determination. Together, the bridges will accommodate up to 2,700 pedestrians per hour and benefit around 16,000 residents.

Traffic Waiting Times Expected to Drop

RTA expects the new crossings to reduce vehicle waiting times at nearby intersections by up to 50%. By separating pedestrians from moving vehicles, the bridges will improve road safety while allowing smoother traffic movement.

Authorities selected the locations following traffic studies that examined pedestrian demand, road capacity and future development requirements.

Part of Wider Dubai Infrastructure Improvements

The project forms part of an agreement between RTA and Dubai Holding to improve transport infrastructure across 15 locations. Additional improvements on Palm Jumeirah include acceleration and deceleration lanes at six locations to improve road access.

Impact to Expect

Residents, visitors and tourists can expect safer crossings, easier access to retail destinations and shorter traffic delays. The bridges will also support Dubai’s long-term plans to create more accessible, pedestrian-friendly communities.
