Dubai registers over 160 self-driving vehicles, with 70 already operating in Jumeirah, as RTA targets 4,000 autonomous taxis by 2030

DUBAI: Dubai has registered more than 160 self-driving vehicles as the emirate accelerates its transition towards autonomous transportation. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) aims to expand the fleet to more than 4,000 autonomous taxis and limousines by 2030.

Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA, confirmed that 70 vehicles are already operating in Jumeirah. Passengers can book rides through Uber and Apollo Go, supported by partnerships with WeRide and Baidu’s Apollo Go.

Dubai Tests Self-Driving Vehicles on Major Roads

The RTA is testing autonomous vehicles along Emirates Road (E611), near Al Maktoum International Airport, and through the airport tunnel. The trials assess vehicle performance across three highway lanes under real traffic conditions. They also examine how autonomous systems respond to unexpected situations.

According to RTA, self-driving vehicles have covered approximately four million kilometres without significant reported operational challenges.

Safety Tests Cover 248 Driving Scenarios

Dubai Mobility Labs evaluates autonomous vehicles through more than 248 testing scenarios. These include sudden braking, pedestrian crossings, children entering roads and traffic signal recognition. The tests also assess vehicle performance during extreme heat, humidity and fog.

RTA officials say human error contributes to approximately 95% of road accidents. Autonomous technology aims to reduce risks associated with distraction, fatigue and excessive speeding. Companies must meet strict safety requirements before receiving operating licences.

Impact to Expect

Dubai aims to make 25% of all transport journeys autonomous by 2030. The expansion could improve mobility, reduce human-error-related accidents and increase access to smart transport services.

The initiative also supports Dubai’s D33 Economic Agenda by encouraging investment in artificial intelligence, transport technology and innovation.

As autonomous fleets expand, residents could gain wider access to driverless taxis across additional Dubai neighbourhoods.
