El Niño could bring above-average temperatures and increased rainfall to the UAE, with the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) forecasting a 96% probability of the climate pattern continuing from November 2026 through March 2027

ABU DHABI: The El Niño UAE weather outlook suggests residents could experience warmer temperatures and increased rainfall in the coming months, with forecasters estimating a 96 per cent probability of the global climate phenomenon continuing through March 2027.

According to the UAE’s National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), seasonal predictions indicate temperatures and rainfall could remain near or above their usual averages between November 2026 and March 2027.

The effects may also extend into April, although individual weather events cannot yet be predicted with certainty.

What is El Niño and why does it matter?

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon caused by unusually warm ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

Although it develops thousands of kilometres away, the phenomenon can influence atmospheric circulation, rainfall distribution and temperatures across different regions, including the Arabian Peninsula.

The NCM’s seasonal climate outlook indicates that the current El Niño event is particularly strong, with forecasts suggesting it could reach peak intensity during October and November 2026.

Will the UAE experience more rain in 2027?

The El Niño UAE forecast points towards the possibility of increased rainfall during the coming winter and early spring.

However, this does not mean heavy rainfall will occur continuously or affect every emirate equally.

Seasonal forecasts describe broad climatic trends rather than predicting the timing, intensity or location of individual storms.

The NCM has indicated that stronger weather conditions could develop towards the end of the forecast period if suitable atmospheric conditions emerge.

Residents should therefore follow official short-term weather forecasts for more reliable information about approaching rain or changing conditions.

Why could temperatures remain higher than usual?

El Niño can influence regional atmospheric patterns, potentially contributing to warmer-than-average weather.

The NCM expects temperatures across the Emirates to remain around or above seasonal norms during the forecast period.

This does not mean every day will be unusually hot, particularly as the country moves through its cooler winter months.

Instead, average temperatures over an extended period may exceed historical seasonal levels.

What precautions should UAE residents take?

Residents should monitor official NCM forecasts, particularly when planning outdoor activities, road journeys or travel through mountainous and low-lying areas.

During periods of heavy rainfall, motorists should avoid flooded roads and wadis, while families should follow any safety advisories issued by local authorities.

The 96 per cent probability refers to the continuation of El Niño conditions, not the likelihood of flooding or severe storms in the UAE.

Impact to expect

The El Niño UAE outlook could influence travel, outdoor events, agriculture and daily activities over the coming months. Potentially warmer and wetter conditions may require additional planning, particularly for transport and public safety. However, the severity of any local weather disruption remains uncertain.
