ABU DHABI: The UAE could experience above-average rainfall in the coming months as a powerful El Niño continues to strengthen, but meteorologists have stressed that the climate phenomenon does not automatically mean heavy rain will occur across the country.
The World Meteorological Organization said on September 23, 2026, that El Niño is strengthening and is forecast to develop into a very strong event by the end of the year. The global weather phenomenon can alter rainfall and temperature patterns thousands of kilometres from the tropical Pacific, increasing the risk of flooding in some regions while contributing to drought and extreme heat elsewhere.
What El Niño could mean for UAE weather
For the Emirates, UAE El Niño rainfall remains dependent on regional and local atmospheric conditions. The National Centre of Meteorology has previously explained that El Niño’s direct effects are concentrated in the Pacific Ocean and its influence on the UAE is indirect.
