Abu Dhabi: A recent interactive video conference with Emirati astronaut Sultan Al Neyadi, who is on the longest space mission onboard the International Space Station (ISS), was organized by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the sport’s regulating body in the UAE.

Al Neyadi discussed his amazing experience of practicing jiu-jitsu in space and how the sport has helped him on his path during the session on Wednesday. Al Neyadi made history earlier in May when he became the first astronaut to practice jiu-jitsu at the ISS.

Brigadier General Mohammed bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, a representative on the board of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, opened the special event. Along with several of the UAEJJF’s strategic partners, Fahad Ali Al Shamsi, secretary-general of the UAE, attended the event.

Al Neyadi had a fascinating talk with the UAE National Team during the event. He thanked the group for capturing the Jiu-Jitsu World Championship title for a record fourth time. Last week, the competition was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where the team excelled and won a total of 14 magnificent medals, including eight gold, four silver, and two bronze.

Testament of true mettle

Al Neyadi emphasized that these awards are evidence of the true mettle of the heroes who take great pleasure in and feel deeply a part of their beloved country and its government. He applauded their tireless efforts to represent the country’s flag on all international stages with distinction and honor.

Al Neyadi expressed his thoughts on how his jiu-jitsu experience has aided in his mission in response to queries from the audience. “Practising jiu-jitsu in the unique environment of space has been an extraordinary experience,” he said, live from the International Space Station.

A great example

Al Shamsi complimented Al Neyadi’s accomplishments and emphasized that he sets a fantastic example for the nation’s children and is an inspiration to those with unrestricted goals and aspirations. He expressed his joy and honor at speaking with a national hero who has embraced space and the dreams of all Emiratis, as well as at being surrounded by the world Jiu-Jitsu champion players of the national team.

Shamma Al Kalbani, the world champion in the 63 kg weight class and the star of the national jiu-jitsu squad, expressed her delight at speaking with Al Neyadi and engaging in a candid conversation with him. She continued by saying that they could all benefit from his tenacity, bravery, and selflessness.
