Regular WhatsApp users in India will continue to use chats, calls and status for free. The new charges from October 1, 2026 apply mainly to businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform or API

NEW DELHI: Claims that WhatsApp will stop being free in India from October 1 have caused confusion among users, but the change does not affect ordinary WhatsApp users.

Meta is revising pricing for the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026, meaning companies using WhatsApp API tools for customer service, automated replies and transactional messages will have to pay for certain messages that were previously free.

Who will remain unaffected?

People using regular WhatsApp for personal chats, voice calls, video calls, group conversations and status updates will continue to use the service without paying a per-message fee.

The change also does not apply to businesses using only the standard WhatsApp Business app on a phone. It specifically targets companies using the larger-scale WhatsApp Business Platform or API.

Which businesses will pay?

From October 1, businesses using the WhatsApp Business Platform will begin paying for service messages after a monthly free allowance.

Each business phone number will receive 1,000 free service messages per month. After that, additional service messages will be charged according to Meta’s applicable India pricing. Utility messages, including order confirmations, delivery notifications and similar updates sent within the 24-hour customer-service window, will also become chargeable.

The change is particularly relevant to banks, e-commerce companies, airlines, retailers and other organisations that use automated WhatsApp communication at scale.

Why the confusion?

Social media posts claiming that every WhatsApp message will cost users money have blurred the distinction between consumer WhatsApp and WhatsApp’s commercial messaging platform.

Reports circulating in India about users having to pay around 14 paise per message refer to certain business messaging charges, not messages exchanged between friends and family.

Impact to expect

Ordinary WhatsApp users should notice no change, while businesses handling large volumes of customer-support and transactional messages may face higher communication costs and could review how frequently they send automated WhatsApp updates.
